Police said on Twitter that people on an overpass were "throwing objects at officers, dumping liquid on officers" and others were throwing rocks and a construction material called rebar. According to police records obtained by The Advocate, DeRay was charged with "simple obstruction of a highway of commerce".

Both cities continue to reel after the deaths of two black men at the hands of police last week.In Saint Paul, protesters blocked Interstate 94 and chanted the name of Philando Castile, a 32-year-old man who was fatally shot by a St. Anthony police officer in Falcon Heights on Wednesday.

Protesters were demonstrating against the shooting death Tuesday of 37-year-old Alton Sterling.

"There's a lot of work to be done with this police department specifically", McKesson told reporters outside the jailhouse.

More than 150 people also gathered in downtown Newport, Rhode Island, in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Mckesson told the Bowdoin Orient student newspaper in 2014, when he was protesting the shooting death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, by a white police officer in Ferguson, a St. Louis suburb, that simply being black should not be perceived as a threat.

"Police have been provocateurs all night", he says in the footage. "People would just like to act like we don't have a legacy of racism here, so I think people get really uncomfortable with it. But we know we can't change it unless we address it".

In Atlanta, a group of protesters on Friday confronted police over Interstates 75 and 85, then moved into the Midtown business district.

The protest was tense earlier as police in riot gear came out, apparently to clear the road so traffic could pass through.

Law enforcement used crowd-control measures, including smoke and fired marking rounds similar to paintball rounds, said police spokesman Steve Linders.

President Obama addressed the recent spate of protests that have taken place across the country during his trip to Spain today, praising the legacy of free speech in America, but warning that violent rhetoric aimed at police officers could result in the Black Lives Matter movement "losing allies".

The same week Sterling and Castile were killed, a gunman killed five police officers at a Black Lives Matter rally in Dallas.

Which is why she's condemning the Dallas shootings, saying it's not about what color a person is.

One man in attendance, named Banditsu, told CNN: "Black lives matter, I'm exhausted of seeing my brothers and sisters becoming a hashtag".

"Don't fight me, don't fight me", the officers said.

Some protesters headed for more demonstrations at the Baton Rouge Police Department, where overnight protests led to 30 arrests.

In central California, several hundred protesters blocked several intersections as they marched against police brutality in central Fresno.

News of DeRay's arrest comes just one day after his 31st birthday. Most arrests were classified as misdemeanors.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office released a list of 30 people arrested in the demonstrations - most for obstructing a highway, but three for inciting to riot.
