The U.S. Olympic Trials in women's gymnastics may really be a race for the last spot on the team.

Four years after surprising the track world with an incredible finish in the women's 5000 meter run at the United States Olympic Trials, Topsfield's Abbey D'Agostino once again toed the line looking to represent her country. Third-place finisher Ben Blankenship also qualified for Rio.

"I'm out of words", she said.

GVSU alum Kristen Hixson cleared two heights during Sunday's pole vault finals and finished in ninth place at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore.

The American record holder was considered a long shot to make the team, but finished in 13 minutes, 35.50 seconds. Both Olympic veterans are expected to be on the five-woman team when it is named on Sunday night.

World record holder Aries Merritt, the gold medalist in the London Olympics, as well as silver medalist Jason Richardson, also advanced in the semifinals earlier Saturday. Runner-up Deajah Stevens will also make her Olympic debut as will Jenna Prandini, who upset favorite Allyson Felix by 100th of a second for third. The second-place finisher did not have the Olympic standard.

Huddle finished well ahead of the pack to win the 5,000 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Trials on Sunday at Hayward Field.

Allyson Felix made it easily through the first round of 200-meter qualifying at Olympic Track and Field Trials, winning her heat in 22.93 seconds.

A year ago at the world championships in Beijing, Huddle celebrated too early in the 10,000-meter race, costing her the bronze medal.

At age 41, Bernard Lagat made his fifth - and most unexpected - Olympics by winning the 5,000-meter final at track trials. Infeld and Nike Bowerman Track Club teammate Shelby Houlihan went with Huddle on the bell lap but as the pace picked up, Huddle and Houlihan pulled away and Kim Conley pulled in to third.

At the USA Track and Field Indoor Championships this March, Hixson came in fourth, with a clear of 15-3, finishing behind 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Jenn Suhr. Runner-up Sandi Morris and third-place finisher Alexis Weeks also qualified for a spot on the Olympic team in Rio. Robbie Andrews finished second in 3:34.88.

The pride of Masconomet High and Dartmouth College finished fifth in the 5K with a season-best time of 15:14.04.

The last 16-year-old to make the team was 100-meter hurdler Rhonda Brady in 1976.
