India's Modi to mark Gandhi's historic South African ride

Modi has also met with members of South Africa's community of Indian origin, which numbers more than 1 million.

In his remarks, President Zuma said that over 100 Indian companies were operating in South Africa and they were playing a "significant role" in the country's economy and job creation.

"They are contributing to their country in education and scientific research, as entrepreneurs and leaders of businesses, as lawyers and judges, and as bankers, doctors and engineers".

The waters of the Indian Ocean are our common sea frontiers.

India is now SA's sixth largest trade partner, with two-way trade reaching $5.3bn in 2015-16. "In India, this is one of the sectors witnessing a complete transformation", he said. Modi will spend two days in South Africa.

"Our trade and investment partnership is already substantial", he said just before winding up his two-day maiden visit to this country.

Secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy and Planning Ramesh Abhishek said that India was committed to helping with skills development and growth of small and medium industries in South Africa.

"Notable advances have been made in sustainable grassroots innovation, though there is still mileage to cover particularly on how our instruments and infrastructure responds to all types of innovation production across the spectrum- age, gender, economic status and location", said Department of Science and Technology spokesman Julian Leshilo.

"We have been friends in adversities".

On Saturday, Modi is expected to take a train journey to commemorate Gandhi, whose experience with racism while living in South Africa as a young man shaped his philosophy of nonviolent protest.

He also visited the Phoenix Settlement near here that Gandhi had established in 1904.

The Prime Minister will visit the solar electricity exhibition at Hotel Hyatt Regency and will address Indian diaspora. Modi is also expected to visit Tanzania and Kenya during his continental tour and is expected to return home on Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday interacted with a group of South African alumni who studied in various Indian institutions under Indian government programmes. "I welcome South Africa's chairmanship of the organisation for 2017-19", he said.

Before departing for Tanzania this evening, he will be given a civic reception by the Mayor of Durban at the city hall.

"On Monday, Modi will visit the United Nations office where he is scheduled to meet with various representatives of UN agencies in Nairobi", the brief says.

"Solar mamas" are women from developing nations who have been trained in harnessing solar energy at the Barefoot College at Tilonia village in Ajmer, Rajasthan.
