Murray Eases Past Broady In First Round

Everyone has opinions. I'm wrong sometimes.

The day after British qualifier Marcus Willis, the world number 772, made the front and back pages by reaching the second round, 235th-ranked Broady was given the Centre Court spotlight but played a subservient role as Murray gave a master class.

Stockport's Liam Broady has taken heart from his first-round defeat to 2013 Wimbledon champion Andy Murray - saying he one day hopes to emulate the Scot and fellow Mancunian Fred Perry.

"Obviously (playing a Brit at Wimbledon) never happened before, for me anyway", said Murray.

"It is a good opportunity for me, I can challenge him once again in a Wimbledon game", said Lu. Works hard.... Look forward to it. But, I mean, it will be a bit unusual. I didn't defend as well as usual. I served well, too.

"I had maybe a couple of chances in the third set to go up a double break". There were a lot of close games, I managed to hang on at the end of the first and then settled down towards the end of the second. It has been a good start.

"That's one of the things I'm going to take away".

The Australian was broken while serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set, and squandered two match points in the tiebreaker.

The British number one then changed the way he prepared for major tournaments, developed a strong team around him to offer expertise in all the right areas and, eventually aided and abetted by Ivan Lendl, was a much-improved player by the time London 2012 came along.

"They're so good at what they do that you forget they're just men in a sense".

He has practised a few times with Murray and admitted the first time he was so nervous he struggled to put the ball in the court. He's got a great personality.

This was the first all-British meeting in the men's singles at a Grand Slam tournament since Tim Henman beat Greg Rusedski in the first round of the US Open 10 years ago.

The world number 235 said: "There are mixed emotions definitely". Does the 25-year-old Briton go back to earning £30 an hour coaching at Warwick Boat Club or does he return to life on the Futures circuit, where prize money levels have barely risen in decades? "We shook hands and he said: 'Good fight, well played.' I said the same to him".

By turns urging herself on and telling herself off, Williams eventually secured match point when her opponent just missed a lob and sealed victory after challenging a wrong call when her shot landed on the far baseline. By the end of the second, most of the third, it was just a match against another guy. I did the opening ceremony and I was hanging out with a lot of the other athletes as I stayed in the village.
