Obama says Dallas gunman was a 'demented individual'

Police said they had taken three people into custody before killing the fourth after a long standoff.

Mr Obama said "it was just not true" the USA was returning "to the situation in the 60s".

US President Barack Obama will cut short a trip to Europe and travel to Dallas next week in the wake of the deadly ambush in the city that left five police dead, the White House has said. "We have to make sure that all of us step back, do some reflection and make sure the rhetoric that we engage in is constructive and not destructive".

"If you care about safety of our police officers, you can't set aside the gun issue and pretend that that's irrelevant", Obama said.

Obama noted that during the shooting in Dallas, police officers had to deal with peaceful protesters having guns, since Texas in an open-carry state.

"I'll leave that to psychologists and people who study these kinds of incidents", Obama said.

The White House also says the president will hold an event next week aimed at addressing racial disparities in America's criminal justice system. "I think the danger is that we somehow suggest the act of a troubled individuals speaks to some larger political statement across the country".
