Trump quips about winning in November -- and not serving as president

According to the Washington Post, when Trump met with Republican senators in D.C. on Thursday his "most tense exchange" was with Flake.

"Yes, I'm the other senator from Arizona - the one that wasn't captured - and I want to talk to you about statements like that", Flake told Trump in the closed-door meeting, the senator confirmed to ABC News.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD) said that he thought Trump's pointed comments about Kirk and Flake had been little more than an attempt to grow party unity.

During the meeting Trump recognized Flake as a lawmaker critical of him. Soon after Trump won House Speaker Paul Ryan's endorsement, top Republicans roundly criticized Trump for his suggestion that a federal judge's Mexican heritage prevented the judge from fairly presiding over the Trump University fraud lawsuit. "I think that will be one of the lesser stories, but still a very interesting one, is to see how the welcoming party here is going to respond to what is a pretty awkward situation for many of them". Trump assured lawmakers he would do well with Latinos - particularly in Nevada - and said he was performing well in OH and other states.

Wendy Day, Cruz's former MI campaign director, told the website that the movement to put the senator's name in for nomination is not linked to an effort to stop Trump from getting it. "I'm not planning on attending the convention", Dent told reporters.

"I asked him about education and national security, and I liked his answers", Alexander said".

"He feels like there is a lack of fairness about showing him truly the way he is - and crowds, when they're around him, come away with a different impression, and I think we did today", Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) said.

Ryan was among those who seemed initially puzzled after Trump lauded Hussein's handling of terrorists. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., one of the presidential candidates defeated by Trump in the Republican primaries, presided over the Senate at the time of the Trump meeting. "There's not a dime's worth of difference between Donald Trump and House Republicans".

McCain, who, unlike Flake is up for re-election this year, said he will support the Republican nominee. Representative Fred Upton said Wednesday he had "a long-standing appointment downtown and I don't know at what time I can get out of that and get back to the Hill".

Democrats mocked Trump's meeting with Republicans on Capitol Hill, saying the GOP is linking itself to the candidate's extreme views on issues like immigration.

A Do-Over With The GOP Establishment: While Trump is about to accept the Republican Party nomination for president, he still doesn't have a lot of strong support from Republicans in Washington.
