Brazilian soap opera actor drowns close to where scenes shot

The 54-year-old starred in the popular soap opera as a farmer who often had to fight off gunmen.

Filming was taking place in the area, Globo TV, which produces the series, said. In one scene, he was shot multiple times and appeared to drown in the same river, only to reappear in the show weeks later.

However, she was unable to keep hold of Montagner and when she got out of the water, she alerted authorities and a large scale search began.

Domingos Montagner will be buried in his native city of Sao Paulo on Saturday.

But several hours later, his body was found trapped between rocks and the riverbed and a depth of 30 metres.

'They thought they had chosen a safe spot to swim, but that is one of the most dangerous areas in the town of Caninde and usually avoided by locals, ' police chief Antonio Francisco Filho told O Globo.

One person, on average, has drowned every year in the town since 2005, reports say.

'This is a part of the river in Caninde that isn't common for bathers'.

Mr Montagner had been a circus performer and acted in the theatre before getting into television in the last few years.

The news of his death has caused commotion in Brazil, where fellow actors and social media users have paid tributes to the actor.

The actor was married with three children.
