High-profile terrorist attacks, such as the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, and coordinated attacks in Paris last year appeared to precipitate retaliatory anti-Islamic crimes in the U.S.as well.

"I am so saddened to hear that", Trump told CBS' Lesley Stahl on "60 Minutes", when she told him Latinos and Muslims were facing harassment. Critics say his pledge has contributed to anti-Muslim sentiment.

In 2014, the FBI recorded 154 crimes; there were 257 in 2015.

By March, more than 50 percent of Americans said they supported his proposed ban, according to a survey by YouGov/Huffington Post.

Over half of all hate crime, 3,310 incidents, or 56.6 percent, was committed on the basis of race, with 52.7 percent being anti-black.

Hate crime incidents against Catholics and LGBT persons actually declined in 2015, the report said. "An Arabic college student wearing a hijab was allegedly robbed and attacked at San Diego State University".

Levin said that Muslims were now the most disdained social group in the US, and have subsequently been subject to widespread prejudice. The data shows 65 percent of the offenses were against people while 34 percent were against property. Crimes against Jewish people increased about 9 percent.

"Donald Trump just named a white supremacist as chief strategist", CAIR's Hooper said.

The number of religiously motivated hate crimes was 1,244, some 21.3 percent of the total.

Michael Lieberman with the Anti-Defamation League said there have been "unprecedented efforts" to address hate crimes in recent years, from outreach to law enforcement, community meetings and an emphasis on cooperation among federal agencies.

In 2015, most hate crime incidents (31.5 percent) occurred in or near residences/homes; 17.4 occurred on highways/roads/alleys/streets/sidewalks; 8.3 percent occurred at schools/colleges; 5.6 percent happened at parking/drop lots/garages; and 4.4 percent took place in churches/synagogues/temples/mosques.

Blacks were the targets in 1,745 of the 2015 cases, 124 more than the year before, while the 613 cases where whites were targeted marked a jump of 20 incidents.
